The Art of Being Heard Begins with Understanding
What makes communication truly effective? Is it how well we articulate our thoughts, or how deeply we understand the person listening?
In Habit 5 of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey introduces three principles that shape meaningful communication: Ethos, Pathos and Logos.- Ethos β Build trust through your character and credibility.
- Pathos β Connect with people by understanding their emotions and perspectives.
- Logos β Communicate with clarity, logic and sound reasoning.
In mentorship, these principles remind us that influence is not simply about having the right answers. It is about earning trust, connecting with people and sharing guidance that speaks to their realities.
A mentor who listens before speaking understands that every mentee has a different story, a different starting point and a unique journey. The goal is not to impose our experiences but to create the understanding that makes growth possible.
Because the most impactful conversations don't begin with what we have to say; they begin with how willing we are to understand.
